Pilot Study: Understanding Public Swimming Pool Visitors

In 2022, a first large-scale study was organized for public pools in the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders). Conducted across 240 pools, the study gathered responses from over 42,000 participants, including swimmers, non-swimmers, and occasional visitors. This Pilot Study provided valuable insights into the behaviour, needs, and satisfaction of public swimming pool users in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Key Findings:

✔ Well-being Impact: high social, emotional and physical benefits reported for all groups, even higher for 60+ visitors.
✔ Satisfaction Levels: high ratings for accessibility and facilities, room for improvement in certain areas.
✔ Barriers to Swimming: reported as potential barriers are water temperature, ticket prices, and feeling comfortable in swimwear.

✔ Pool Usage: distribution of time spent in pools, including school swimming, was described on pool level and country level.

✔ Visitor Behaviour: main reasons for visiting pools, such as leisure, training, and wellness, were concretely described.

The study helps public pools individually, and policymakers globally, make informed decisions to improve services, accessibility, and overall visitor experience. 📊 Interested in insights for your public pool? Contact us for more details.

Swimming Pool Breeven Optimizes Services Based on Public Survey

Starting May 1, Swimming Pool Breeven in Bornem will adjust its services and opening hours to better meet the needs and preferences of its visitors. These changes are based on a thorough evaluation and insights from the public survey "Zwem22", in which Breeven participated.

Key Insights from the Survey

The survey revealed that recreational swimming is the most common use of the pool, while lane swimmers benefit from structured time slots. It also showed that certain off-peak hours attract fewer visitors, and that families with young children form an important user group. These insights help Breeven refine its services and better align them with the needs of all visitors.

Improvements for an Optimal Swimming Experience

Based on the survey results, Breeven is implementing targeted adjustments. Swimming sessions will be more structured, and certain recreational facilities will be expanded. Additionally, the opening hours will be optimized, ensuring that time and space are used more efficiently.

Public Survey as a Guiding Tool for Pools

The Zwem22 survey, conducted by organizations such as the Mulier Institute, Ghent University, and Sento, gathered insights from over 42,000 respondents about their swimming experiences. By analyzing this data, public pools can better tailor their services and organization to the expectations of their visitors.
